Start at the junction by the Town Hall. Face Chapel
street and walk down it, passing Grove House Gallery
on your right.
Miss Intake Lane, and pass the Methodist Chapel on
your right. At Bank Lane follow the wood signpost uphill
for a short distance before turning left into a walled
lane. Continue on.
At this (See Pic.) Walk forward and take the double
metal gate in front of you then walk up the walled gree
lane. |
|
| |
Enjoy
the wonderful views all around.
A pair of double metal gates confront you, exit one
and use the next directly in front of you (See Pic.)
Don't go left or right here.
Eventually ahead of you is a green lane junction. Take
the lower one off to the left, and acknowledge the fingerpost
over on your extreme left, taking its right direction
fin as yours.
You will be returning through that gap later so keep
it in mind.
At this point walk away from it heading 350' North. |
|
| |
Keep the trees in sight over on your left hand side.
The landscape here is quite diverse, you should find
yourself completely alone and at one with nature.
At a green lane junction go left, and at a smaller
junction take the thinner path left, keeping a dry stone
wall in sight over on the left.
There is a rugged stony/grassy pathway with lots of
clints and grikes over on the left, and eventually ahead
of you, a very interesting scree landscape. (See Pic.
and hover over with mouse) |
|
| |
Finally here, over on the left, (See Pic.) a pathetic
excuse for a four bar double metal gate, and this four
stepped wood ladder stile.
Go over the ladder stile and turn right, taking the
left fork in the path, not long after. |
|
| |
You will see this stone squeeze gate, (See Pic.) slink
through this and head downhill. Yes. It may be less
than 45 degrees, it may be incredibly steep, it may
be tiring... just get down to the bottom there safe
and sound please, and stop moaning.
You have to reach the gully and this is the only way.
Look up and you will notice a pathway left - once you
reach the other side take it. |
|
| |
Now on your right, not far away is this gateway, (See
Pic.)
Take it and immediately turn left following the pathway
enjoying the views all around. |
|
| |
Continue along this pathway and enjoy the views.
Unless of course, it's raining or snowing.
Short wood posts (See Pic.) with a yellow arrow on
a green background let you know both the direction you
need to head, and whether or not you are colour challenged? |
|
| |
Now just keep yourself on the Green Lane.
You go through various gates...this is one of them...
(See Pic.)
|

At
two points, you will open gates that belong to a literate
farmer.
It is here you can see the spectacular Kilnsey Crag
directly in front of you. (See Pic.)

The
pathway winds downhill and eventually you meet this
gate at Conistone Village. (See Pic.)
Go through the gate and turn left then right, and find
the maypole.
Centre of the village. |
|
11 |
This,
or the seat in the next cell, are the best places for
partaking of Tiffen.
Just sit down and take in the quiescence of the area,
and watch out for the local partridge.
Conistone Centre. (See Pic.) |
|
12 |
From
The triangle and maypole, turn sharp right and go up
this road, (See Pic.) and take the gravel road on the
right.
There is another seat here over on the right.
Go through the double metal gate, and follow the path
signposted FP Conistone Dib. |
|

Here
(See Pic.) is the entrance, and the steps to the start
of the Dib.
Another
Photo Opportunity!
Out of the Dib, go through a wood kissing gate.
Pass a small metal gate on your right hanging off the
space in the wall.
Pass a radio mast high on your left.
Keep an eye open for the double gate on your right see
next cell. |
|
|
Walk
on.
Here at this gate, (See Pic.) you have a choice.
Turn right and use this gate for an easy option.
Or move forward and over on the left is another gate. |
|
| 14B |
For
a more dramatic walk experience, (broken limbs/helicopter
flights/hospital admissions/time off work etc.) Take
this swing kissing gate instead. (See Pic.)
Walk forward and then keep the wall on your left.
The path is mainly scree and rock and extremely difficult
to navigate. |
|
| 15B |
Heave
your weight up this difficult incline and head for the
space between the two trees. (See Pic.)
The road is long. With many a winding turn. That leads
us to who knows where...Who knows where
But I'm strong. Strong enough to carry him.
He ain't heavy, he's my rucksack.
No regrets?
I had a few.
Anyway ...Good Luck. |
|
| 16B |
This
is the most incongruous gate on any walk.
Although it does stop the odd mountain goat, or Yeti
passing through onto the tundra.
Go through it (See Pic.) and scramble up further making
sure you concentrate every faculty and sinew to get
you to the top without scragging your knees or breaking
your back.
Well done you only have a few miles left and all on
the Dales Way! |
|
| 17B |
At
the top of this clamber, over on your right, is this
single wood swing gate. (See Pic.)
As you pass through, go directly forward, following
the line of rocks seen in the picture, and meet the
path which is the Dales Way. |
|
18 |
Both
routes end at this picture (See Pic.)
Both paths will kettle you to this four stepped stone
stile.
Go over this, and continue along the path.
|
|
19 |
This
is the Dales Way.
As long as you keep to the obvious pathway you will
end up heading slowly downhill and into Grassington.
Go through a series of stone stepped stiles, a three
stepped stone stile then this gate onto a green highway.
(See Pic.)
At a wall with a dedication plaque, go over the gated
stile and follow the yellow Dales Way arrow which points
distinctly left.
|
|
20 |
This
is the squeeze gate we saw at cell 2. (See Pic.)
Take it and continue along the Dales Way.
(or find the original path you used,
and walk your return route,
the same way back in.)
I recommend that you hug the wall and track left, as
this gives a more level traverse of the undulating terrain.
|
|
21 |
One
of the last squeeze stiles. (See Pic.)
Take it, then another like it, and you should now see
Grassington down below. Keep to the high ground and
head to the next hurdle. There are several ways down,
just follow any path downover and the signposts to Grassington/Dales
Way.
Look for the large farm buildings, head towards them.
Do not enter the farm. Take the public rights of way
around it. |
|
| 22 |
Cross
here go through the gate and turn right.
This takes you to Bank Lane then Chapel Street and
the starting point.
|

Toilets
are not available on this flight, try RyanAir or the bush. |
