A gentle walk with a geological gem in the middle.

This walk was Complied by Cragface.
All Words, Photography, etc. are by the man himself.

1

Set off from the village of Austwick, (pictured, is the Green) follow the road to Horton, passing the pub, The Game Cock on your left.

2

Turn left here (picture) at Town Head Lane, and follow the route on, heading uphill.

3

At this point (picture) climb the wood stepped stile on the left of the road. (the gate is locked) and head along the path signed by a wooden post to Clapham.

Another wooden stepped stile, go over in the direction of the yellow arrow.

4

Here at this (pictured) wooden stepped stile, beware the top wood struts!

Go over this stepped stile, and onto a lane.

5

Once on the lane, turn right and walk along here for about half a mile.

10 yards before the road, (crossroad of road and track) this padlocked 5 bar wooden gate, on the left (picture) and wood stepped stile. Go over the stile, and follow the track bearing left.

6

Pass the open 5 bar double gate on your left, keeping to the footpath, and have the five foot drystone wall, also on your left, ...head for the higher ground.

The gate here may be locked (picture), but access is by the three stepped stone stile to its right.

7

Follow the track uphill and where the drystone wall veers left, bear right. Take time out to explore; head for this four-way wood signpost. If you want to look at the Erratics (this is why you're on this walk, right?) head straight up, (following the directions of the post) for the high ground and take in the geological, and scientific phenomena.

Once seen; head back to this (pictured) post and follow the path away from Clapham, East towards Crummack.

8

Follow the track meeting a drystone wall on your right. Go along the track for 25yds, then over a four stepped stone stile on your right, follow the path down and towards your right.

At the bottom, go over this drystone wall (pictured) at the steps, just past the sheep hole. Now with the limestone face on your left and the nasty drop on your right, keep to the path and enjoy the view to your right without falling off the edge!

9
With a drystone wall on your left and beautiful views all around, you arrive at this (pictured) wood stepped stile. Be careful of the slippery slope, cross the road and clamber over the wood stile on the other side. Turn left to cross the field.
10

Go over two wood ladder stiles. (picture) The second has a wooden fingerpost behind it. (for Public Footpath)

Cross over a man-made track, and follow an ill defined green pathway towards some limestone outcrops.

11
Carry on through the gap in the outcrop (picture)
12
Over this stile
13
Through this gate above cut slate steps, and turn left and go down...
14
...to this gap in the wall; turning sharp right as you do, so as to bring you over the clapper bridge.
15
Cross the clapper bridge (pictured as seen from the other side) and follow the lane all the way down. This is about the half-way mark. You are boxed in now for some time by drystone walls on both sides. There are information boards about the area, along the way.
16
Follow this lane all the way down to the village of Wharfe...meeting a track turn left...and at the next junction...a small pathway...turn right... follow this tarmac road (pictured) all the way down.
17
Coming out of the bridleway/footpath which is also a private road, onto a proper public road...(pictured) here ... turn right.

Black & white posts down the right hand side have since been added.

18
After about 100yds, turn left at a bridleway signpost (picture) to Wood Lane, and the road leading to Wood End Farm
19
Arriving at the farmhouse, do not enter, but take that walled pathway just before it on the right. (see picture).

Follow the lane. Pass a path from the left and a gate on your left. At a small cross of tracks (SD776684) you can either take the route forward, eventually going over a small clapper bridge, to end at the main road (SD770687) then turn left, heading SW back into the village.

20
Or take the track to the left continuing down Wood Lane, ending at
SD 769682. Turn right on Graystonber Lane back into the village over Austwick Beck.

Both these routes return you back to the village of Austwick.

I can recommend the chips here at the pub.

Watch the video before you go, to whet your appetite! >>> HERE
There are no toilets along this route except for the pub near the Start and End of this walk.
