Settle is a small market town on the river Ribble, nestling
under magnificent limestone scars. The market charter was
granted in 1248 and the market square is still full of bustling
stalls every Tuesday.
There used to be a set of mounting steps on the side of Garnetts
shop, for people to get on and off their horses when it used
to be an inn. Then suddenly they were gone - somebody had
decided to remove them in the interests of 'progress'. The
outcry over their demolition led to the formation of the North
Craven Heritage Trust, which has bought and restored several
properties, including the Museum of North Craven Life, in
Chapel Street
In the days of coach travel, Settle was a well known stopping
place, being on the York to Lancaster and Kendal highway.
Today, visitors, walkers and cyclists still come to Settle
and sample the hospitality of the inns and hotels in the town.
Settle has a long history of carnivals. Nowadays all the
shops have a flag outside designating their content, during
fairs, and special holidays.
