Ingleton soon went onto the tourist agenda when the railway
line arrived in Settle in 1849. So it wasn't long before a
group of residents, recognising tourist potential in the local
scenery, formed the "Ingleton Improvement Society"
in 1884, and over the next thirty years created miles of paths,
built steps and bridges all along the the valleys of the Doe
and Twiss, which, probably because the word sounded more romantic,
were called glens!
If you come here to do anything, it has to be the Waterfalls
walk...some parts are taxing, others very slippery and treacherous...but
it is the thing to do here, and for the entrance fee, you
can feast your eyes and ears on the torrents and beauty that
is so much the best of the action here in the Dales.
The village streets are narrow and winding, the whole place
is so compact. Nearby the late Victorian church has one of
the finest Norman fonts in Yorkshire.
White Scar Caves are another of Ingleton's special attractions,
and are open daily.
Ingleborough (2372 feet) is one of Yorkshire's Three Peaks,
but not necessarily the most satisfying to climb.
