A lovely little walk from Hebden upstream to Grassington. Or
you can do a circular starting from the entrance to the Smelt
Mill where there was lead working at nearby Greenhow from
Roman times.
Grassington Moor has a long history of lead mining with records dating back
to the 15th Century at a time when the monks of Fountains
Abbey worked a smelt mill. The water for it was from
Hebden Ghyll or beck or stream
Turn left after the Clarendon Hotel on the main drag
and make your way right over the bridge, signposted
"FP Edge Top". Then left over the metal
bridge, onto the pathway right, with the stream on
your right, heading north along the Ghyllside up towards
the Cupola Smelt Mill entrance. Don't miss the double
wooden seven bar diagonal gate with wood fingerpost
on your right at the top of the rise.
