15 miles from Grassington
Once a Roman fort town, it was a fashionable spa
resort in Victorian times. The famous Ilkley Moor,
and the Cow and Calf rocks are excellent places to
enjoy a ramble. Now there are lots of interesting
shops, and the famous Betty's Tea Room on the Grove,
a bandstand and even "charity shops!"
The Manor House is one of the oldest buildings in
Ilkley standing on the remains of Olicana, a Roman
Fort. Now filled with relics of the past, and interesting
displays, this free attraction is well worth a visit.
Near the River Wharfe, opposite the metal pedestrian
bridge is
Middleton Woods, which, in early May, has a spectacular
show of bluebells...see video. This site is of both
ecological and geological importance and was formerly
owned by the Myddelton family.
Middleton Woods cover an area of approximately 40
hectares. Hiding amongst the trees and Great Bittercress,
are the resident Comma, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock
butterflies.
Also take the opportunity to visit the ancient stone
bridge and ‘Jacobs Ladder’ steps whilst
enjoying a leisurely woodland walk or nature trail.
