Grassington
Friendship club:
Diane Mackridge, chairman of Grassington in Bloom, will be
the speaker at Friday's meeting of Grassington Friendship
Club. Next Thursday afternoon, May 24, Cath Currer will speak
about a "Mission Project to Tanzania". The club
meets in Church House at 2.15pm.
Horticultural talk:
Grassington and District Horticultural Society will hold a
coffee morning in Church House next Saturday, May 26, from
10am.
Christian Aid:
In support of Christian Aid Week, which started on Sunday,
there will be a house to house collection. Envelopes can also
be returned to The Hedgerow in Threshfield or Grassjngton
Post Office.
Farmers market:
The next farmers' market on the square will be on Sunday from
10am.
Upper Wharfedale
Family history:
The Wharfedale Family History Group will meet at Threshfield
Institute on Saturday at 2.30pm. The speaker will be Glenys
Marriott, of the Upper Dales Family History Society, and her
subject will be Those Who Left the Dale. Visitors are welcome
for an admission fee of £1.
Art AGM:
Buckden Art Group will hold its annual general meeting in
the Institute on Wednesday, May 30, at 7.30pm.
Weather report:
Ian Robinson reports that Arncliffe saw the driest March for
42 years, with just 1.24 inches of rain. The seven-year average
for March, up to 2012, was 5.03 inches.
Safari suppers:
Safari suppers in aid of St Mary's Churches in Kettlewell
and Conistone will be held tomorrow (Friday). Tickets cost
£12.50 from 760887. St Oswald's Church, Arncliffe, will
hold its safari supper on Saturday. Tickets cost £12.50

Floral volunteers:
Barbara Lambert is struggling to find enough volunteers to
do the altar flowers in St Mary's Church, Kettlewell, on a
fortnightly basis. All that is required are two simple bunches
of flowers topped with -water. To offer help contact Barbara

Collection thanks:
Thanks are extended to Muriel Raw, of Kettlewell, for organising
the Upper Wharfedale collection for the Leprosy Mission. A
total of £305 has been collected this year.
Coffee morning:
Halton Gill Reading Room is the venue for a coffee morning
next Saturday, May 26, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. It will raise
money for the ambulance services.
Jubilee barbecue:
A celebration party and barbecue to commemorate the Queen's
Diamond Jubilee will be held at Halton Gill Reading Room on
Monday, June 4, from 6pm.
Jumble money:
The jumble sale held in Kettlewell Village Hall on Easter
Monday raised more than £300.
Street party:
Buckden will host a diamond jubilee street party in the lane
behind the institute on Tuesday, June 5, at 12.30pm. The format
will be a Jacob's join. There is a charge of £2 for
adults with all proceeds going to the Buckden Village Institute
Centenary Appeal. The party will be followed by a rounder's
match on the green at 4pm and a barbecue at Buckden Garth

Variety cash:
About £700 was raised for Kettlewell Village Hall from
two variety shows in March.
Rounders:
Kettlewell Ladies Rounders Team play throughout the summer
on Thursday nights at Kettlewell Primary School and at friendly

Hall dance:
A dance and supper will be held at Cracoe Village Hall on
Saturday from 7.30pm.
Fellowship Group:
Cracoe and District Fellowship Group plans to visit Wensleydale
Creamery on Tuesday at 1pm. Further information is available

Sports thanks:
Craven and Rylstone District Sports Committee thanks all who
supported the coffee morning. Almost £400 was raised
which means the Olympic Sports Day on Monday, June 4, and
the children's Christmas party on Sunday, December 16, can
now be organised.

Craft workshop:
Roberta Balmforth invites everyone to a Recycle Yorkshire
creative craft workshop at the Congregational Church next
Saturday, May 19, from 12.30pm to 4pm. Take along an old pair
of jeans and have fun making then into a stylish bag, a corsage
or a hanging heart. Only basic hand-stitching skills are needed
and all materials and equipment will be provided, plus light

'WAGS outing:
Nineteen members of Women Around Grassington (WAGS) enjoyed
a trip to Fleetwood.
Christian Aid:
Christine Chisholm thanks everyone who has supported her during
the past eight years as a Christian Aid representative. She
reports in the Congregational newsletter that Paula Jackson
has taken over role.
Friendship Club:
Joe O'Hehir will be in charge of the quiz from 2.15pm at the
Grassington Friendship Club meeting in Church House Thursday.
Next week, Diane Mackridge, chairman of Grassington in Bloom,
will address the meeting.
Jubilee queen:
The search is on to find Grassinghton's jubilee queen. Girls
aged from 11 to 16 are invited to enter and those wishing
to take part should contact Ann Wild at Grassington Hub on

Upper Wharfedale
Women's Institute:
The speaker at a recent meeting of Rylstone WI was Liz Hird,
from Yockenthwaite. She told how the family farm had diversified
into a bed and.breakfast and haw. that had led her to produce
granola and write a column for the Craven Herald.
Safari supper:
The safari supper, in aid of St Oswald's Church, Arncliffe,
will take place next Saturday, May 19. The tour will be around
Arncliffe and will consist of three courses, plus pre-dinner
drinks and coffee. The price has been kept at £12.50
per person and tickets can be ordered from 770000.
Church charity:
This month's charity collection at St Michael and All Angels'
Parish Church, Hubberholme, will go to the Craven Area Inter-Schools
Christian Union. In March, £122 was donated to the Tear
Fund.
Monthly lunch:
The May "Luncheon Club in Kettlewell will be held next
Thursday, May 17, at 12.30pm in the village hall. Ring Ann

Bridge Club:
Kettlewell Bridge Club will meet in the village hall on Tuesday

Friendship Club:
5th of May's meeting has been cancelled as Church House is
being used for the election. Next Thursday, May 10,
Joe 0' Hehir will be the quizmaster from 2.15pm.
Bowled over:
Junior cricket members will hold a coffee morning in Church
House on Saturday from 10am.
Book stall:
Grassington in Bloom will be holding a book stall on the cobbled
square on Sunday, from 10am to 4pm. Books are needed and can
be delivered on the day or donors can arrange for earlier
delivery or collection by calling 752720. The next meeting
will be held on Tuesday in Church House from 7.30pm.
Jubilee celebrations:
A regatta and raft race will form part of the three-day celebrations
to mark the' Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June. A raft race
application pack is available on 07761 940644.
Volunteers sought:
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer at Grassington Festival,
which runs from June 15 to 30, can call at the festival box
office, next door to The Hub, for further details.
Film screening:
The film Cars will be shown in the Octagon next Saturday,
May 12, from 4.30pm. The evening movie at 7pm will be Jane
Eyre. Tickets are available at the Hub or on the door.
40s event:
Plans will be made for a 40s event to be held later this year
at a meeting in the Black Horse Hotel on Tuesday at 5pm. Anyone
interested is welcome to attend.
Upper Wharfedale
Women's Institute:
The speaker at the April meeting of Threshfield and Linton
WI was Isobel Stirk, who gave a talk on the Bronte family.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday when Maria Glot will
speak on Saltaire and Titus Salt. Please note this meeting
will be held in Linton Institute.
Heritage Group:
Arnold Pacey enthralled Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group with
a talk about Dales Field Barns, their history and context.
The field work for the group's own survey of traditional farm
bufldings in the parish of Kettlewell with Starbotton is nearing
completion, with around 200 buildings already recorded. The
next activity is a walk led by Dr Roger Martlew to look at
the archaeology of Rough Haw, overlooking Skipton, on Saturday,

Cracoe Cricket Club held its annual general meeting at the
Devonshire Arms.

Parish, council:
Grassington Parish Council has been returned in its entirety
of nine members as no other nominations were received.
Friendship Club:
The club will not meet next Thursday, May 3, because Church
House is being used for the Craven District Council election.
The programme will be resumed on Thursday, May 10, at 2.15pm
when Joe O'Hehir will be the quizmaster.
Bloom Stall:
Grassington in Bloom will be fundraising at a book stall on
the square on Sunday, May 6, from 10am to 4pm. Books are needed
and can be taken to the stall on the day or call 752720 in
advance.
Upper Wharfedale
Jubilee ideas:
James Snowden, clerk to Rylstone Parish Meeting, would appreciate

Coffee morning:
The coffee morning for the Chitepani Trust raised £737.
Sue Morris, of Cracoe, thanks everyone who supported the event.
Local history:
The speaker at the Local History Group meeting held in the
Cracoe Village Hall was David Wiseman. His talk, "Two
Kettlewell boys transported" was about two of his ancestors
who were transported to Australia in the first half of the
19th century for what today would have been classed as petty
crime.
Hall dance:
A dance and supper will be held in Cracoe Village Hall on
Saturday, from 7.30pm to 11.30pm.
School collection:
The next collection of Bags2 School is on Tuesday. It has
been arranged by the Friends of Cracoe and Rylstone Primary
School, who would welcome any unwanted clothing, bedding and
shoes. It can be collected by calling Karen on 730109.
Spring fair:
St Michael's Parish Church, Linton, will hold its spring fair
on Monday, May 7, from 9am to 5pm.
Calendar Girls:
Five of the original Rylstone WI Calendar Girls will attend
the launch of Cosgroves' Fashion Club at Rimington next Thursday,

Grassington
Bistro night:
Bisto nights are being introduced at Whimsical Cottage Café,
in Garrs Lane. These will be held weekly, beginning with Thursday
and Fridays, from 6pm.
Friendship Club:
The Friendship Club is going on a coach trip to Oswaldtwistle
Mills today. Next Thursday, Charles Bhowmick will give a talk
on Charlie's Memoirs in Church House at 2.15pm.
Book plea:
Grassington in bloom group is asking for donations of sooks
for its stall on Grassington Square. Ring 752720 for advanced
donations or or. or deliver them to the stall on Sunday, May
6. It will run from 10am to 4pm.
Movie night:
There will be a movie night at the Octigon Theatre in Saturday.
Toy Story will be shown at 5pm and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier,
Spy at 7.30pm. Refreshments and pipcorn will be on sale. Advance
tickets are available from Grassington Hob at £4 for
adults, £2 for children and £10 for families (maximum
of four children).
Coffee morning:
A coffee morning will be held in Church House on Saturday,
hosted by Upper Wharfedale Folk Museum. The museum is currently
closed while the roof is raised to provide more space in the
attic.

Family history:
Wharfedale Family History Group will meet at Threshfield Village
Institute on Saturday at 2.30pm. The speaker will be Barbara
Dixon, a former registrar, and the title of her talk is "A
ramble round the register office". Visitors are welcome
for an admission fee of £1
Bag collection:
The Friends of Kettlewell School are collecting unwanted clothing,
bedding etc. Blue bags are being distributed, which can be
filled and left at the side of the school under the canopy
until Wednesday, May 9.
Church meeting:
St Michael and All Angels' Parish Church, at Hubberholme,
will be holding its annual general meeting on Tuesday at 7pm
in Buckden Schoolroom. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
Society meeting:
Kettlewell and District Horticultural Society will meet in
the village hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm to discuss the annual
show in September. There will be speakers who can answer any
queries from those new to the show. There will also be refreshments
and a raffle.
Toy library:
The Upper Wharfedale Toy Library resumes service this month.
It will provide a lending scheme to local communities in partnership
with Grassington Hob and Upper Wharfedale Children's Centre
and will be run by volunteers. The project will be managed
by co-ordinator Tracy Hopkins after funding was made available
through the Rural Development Programme for England.
Institute AGM:
The annual general meeting of Buckden Village Institute will
take place on Tuesday, May 1, from 7.30pm. All residents of
the parish are invited to attend with ideas for fundraising
and other activities as the hall enters its centenary year.

Farmers' market:
Grassington's regular farmers' market will be held on The
Square on Sunday, from 10am.
Garden talk:
Grassington and District Horticultural Society's opening show
will take place on Saturday in Grassington Town Hall. It will
be open to the public following the judging. There will be
a silver collection in the foyer and home-made refreshments.
Friendship Club:
Richard Clarke will be the guest speaker at Grassington Friendship
Club, which is due to meet Thursday, at 2.15pm, in Church
House. His address is entitled "Houses". Next week,
there will be an outing to Oswaldtwistle
Mills.
Upper Wharfedale
Spring Fair:
The Friends of Kettlewell School invite everyone to their
spring fair next Saturday, April 21, from 2pm to 4pm.
Hall Dance:
Kettlewell Village Hall is the venue for an old time dance
to music by Tim Boothman next Saturday, April 21, from 8pm
to 11.30pm. The ticket price of £7.50 (under-14s £4)

Bridge Club:
Kettlewell Bridge Club will meet in the social room of the

Horticultural Show:
Littondale Floral and Horticultural Society will hold its
spring show in Amerdale Hall, Arncliffe Friday. There will
be classes for cut flowers, pot plants and produce. There
will be tea and cakes available and a raffle. The society's
main show will be held on Sunday, August 26. Schedules will
be available at the spring show.

Friendship Club:
The Rev Peter Thomas will speak on "Easter is more than
just chocolate" at Grassington Friendship Club today.
Next week, Richard Clarke will address members on the topic
of horses.
Plant stall:
Proceeds from the plant stall on The Square from 10am to 4pm
on Easter Sunday will benefit Grassington in Bloom. Any gifts
of surplus plans would be welcome. Please take them to the
stall on the day.
Grassington Singers:
The Singers will present their spring concert next Sunday,
April 15 in the Methodist Church, Chapel Street. The programme
will include Hear My Prayer by Mendelssohn, Cantique de Jean
Racine by Faure and music by Haydn and Schubert. Tickets are
£5 in advance or £7 on the door. Tickets are available

Compost:
The new compost site at the Shelter Field car park is open,
but please do not deposit food or large trees.
Exhibition:
Artist Michael Curran, from Rawdon, will be holding an exhibition

from Friday to Tuesday, from 10.30am to 5pm.

Bloom:
The mont-ly meeting will be on Tuesday in Church House. There
will be a report on the spring judging by Yorkshire in Bloom,
which took place on March 26.

Coffee morning:
The coffee morning in Church House on Saturday will be hosted
by the Craven Badger Group. Starting at 10am, the event will

Fairtrade money:
The Fairtrade fair, held at the Congregational Church, raised
£180 for Christian Aid.
Charity dinner:
June Robinson thanks all who supported the charity dinner
at Grassington House Hotel. A total of £700 was raised
for Manorlands Hospice.

Clay pigeon shoot:
The Upper Wharfedale Branch of Skipton and Ripon Conservative
Association has arranged a clay pigeon shoot and barbecue.
It will take place from 1.30pm to 5pm on Saturday, May 5,

Jumble sale:
Kettlewell Village Hall Committee is seeking contributions
for its annual jumble sale. Unwanted items of clothing, bric-a-brac
etc can be left in the hall porch on Easter Sunday from 2pm
to 4pm, ready for the sale on Monday. The event will begin
at 10.30am and light refreshments will be available.
Women's Institute:
The March meeting of Kettlewell WI was a members' night. The
business meeting was chaired by Sue Nelson and was followed
by refreshments, hosted by Audrey Pidgeon and Sonia Wilkinson.
The evening was rounded off with a domino drive, organised
by Patsy Campbell, and the winner was Jennifer Cuthbert. The
booby prize went to Betty Potter. Raffle winners were Muriel
Raw and Barbara Lambert.
Mobile library:
The supermobile library will be at the national park car park
in Kettlewell on Wednesdays April 11 and 25, from 2pm to 4pm.
Easter teas:
Amerdale Hall, Arncliffe, will be the venue for tea and cake
on Easter Sunday, from llam to 4.30pm. Anyone willing to help

Church money:
A coffee morning, held at Halton Gill Reading Room last month,
raised £198.67 for the renovation of the bells at St
Oswald's Church, Arncliffe. There was also a separate personal
donation of £200.
Parish council:
Buckden, Hubberholme and Langstrothdale Parish Council will
meet on Tuesday at 8pm in Buckden Village Institute. All interested
residents are invited to attend.
Kneeler thanks:
Thanks have been extended to everyone who worked on the kneelers
in St Mary's Church, Kettlewell.
Charity service:
This month's charity collection at St Michael's Church, Hubberholme,
will be for the Salvation Army. The February collection amounted
to £102 and was sent to the Red Cross.

Friendship Club:
Terry and Beryl Bamforth will present a musical quiz at today's
meeting of Grassington Friendship Club in Church House at
2.15pm. Next week, the speaker will be the Congregational
Church minister, the Rev Peter Thomas.
Lent lunch:
The Lenten lunch on Wednesday will be hosted by the residents
of Elbolton, Hebden Road.
Garden talk:
"Ponds, bog gardens and wet areas" is the subject
of Ken Green's talk to Grassington and District Horticultural
Society tonight at 7.30pm in the town hall.
Easter service:
Easter Day will be celebrated at the Congregational Church,
with a communion service at 8.30am and a breakfast at 9am.
At 10.30am, an all-age worship will be followed by an Easter
egg hunt.
Bloom stall:
Grassington in Bloom will hold a plant stall in the square
on Easter Sunday from 10am to 4pm. The group meets on the
second Tuesday of each month in Church House from 7.30pm.

1940s event:
The Black Horse Hotel will be the venue for a launch meeting
to discuss a 1940s event in the village. The meeting will
take place on Sunday at 5pm.
Garden talk:
Ponds, Bog Gardens and Wet Areas is the title of Ken Green's
talk at Grassington and District Horticultural Society's meeting
next Thursday, March 29, in the Octagon from 7.30pm.
Lenten lunch:
All the churches in Upper Wharfedale extend an invitation
to Church House for a Lenten lunch on Wednesday. Donations
will be given to Christian Aid.
Friendship Club:
Back to the Future is the title of a presentation to the Friendship
Club by Pat and Annette on Thursday, in Church House at 2.15pm.
Next Thursday, March 29, Terry and Beryl Bamforth will lead
a musical quiz.
Walk of witness:
Churches Together will meet in The Square on Good Friday,
April 6, at 11.45am for a Walk of Witness. It will return
to The Square at noon where there will be a short service.
Museum closed:
Upper Wharfedale Folk Museum in The Square will be closed
until June while improvement work is carried out.
Upper Wharfedale
Women's Institute:
Elaine Macha gave a talk on HIV/Aids in Tanzania to members
of Threshfield and Linton WI. The talk outfined the social
problems relating to the virus and the steps being taken to
educate people and to provide medication. A draw took place
to provide four £25 bursaries for members to use at
Federation events and courses during the year. Members were
reminded about the coffee morning in Church House on Saturday
and that cakes and tombola/raffle prizes are needed. The next
meeting will be at the Threshfield Institute on Wednesday,
April 11, when the talk will be "Haworth at the time
of the Brontes" by JW Stirk.
Coffee success:
A coffee morning in Cracoe raised £700 for Marie Curie
nurses.
Sports committee:
Cracoe Sports Committee will hold a coffee morning in the
village hall on Saturday, from 10am to noon. There will be
children's activities and lots of stalls. Proceeds will help
to fund the annual sports day and children's Christmas party.
Donations of cakes would be welcome. For more information,

History group:
The Local History Group meet at Cracoe Village Hall and enjoyed
a talk by historian and former librarian Ian Dewhirst. His
subject was Victorian and Edwardian Leisure.
Easter lilies:
Hubberholme Church will be decked out with white lilies for
Easter. Anyone who would like to sponsor a lily by way of
remembrance, thanksgiving or dedication can send a donation

Variety show:
The Kettlewell Variety Show will take place next Friday and
Saturday, March 30 and 31, in the village hall from 7.30pm.

Whist drive:
A whist drive will be held in Buckden Village Institute on
Wednesday and it will be the final event of the season, starting

Embroiderers'
Guild:
Janet Taylor, speaker at the March meeting, arrived to a power
cut, but fortunately supplies were restored in the nick of
time and she gave an 'illuminating' talk on the Luttrell Psalter
project. The next meeting, on Wednesday, April 4, and will
be a Blackwork workshop with Elisabeth Almond at Wharfedale
Rugby Club, from 10am to 4pm. The cost is £15 and booking

Congregational Church:
The Women's World Day of Prayer service was well attended
by members of all churches in and around Grassington. The
sum of £155.32 was raised for Christian Unity.
Friendship Club:
Barton Grange, near Preston, is the destination for the club's
spring outing Thursday. Pat and Annette will present Back
to the Future at next Thursday's meeting in Church House at
2:15 pm.
Lent Lunch:
The Lenten Lunch on Wednesday will be in the Congregational
Church.
Support group:
The Wharfedale Support Group for Manorlands Hospice will present
"We Will Rock You", featuring Mid-Life
Crisis and DJ Bower, at Grassington Town Hall on Saturday,
March 24, from 8pm. There will be a bar and a raffle. Tickets

Family History
Group:
The next meeting of Wharfedale Family History Group will be
in Threshfield Village Institute on Saturday at 2.30pm. This
will see the return of speaker Gilian Waters, formerly of
the Royal Armories,
whose subject is The Tudor North. Visitors are welcome for
a £1 entry fee.
Village hall show:
The next entertainment at Burnsall Village Hall takes place
on Friday and stars singer/songwriter duo HowdenJones.

will be admitted free if accompanied by an adult. The bar
will be open from 7.30pm and the performance starts at 8pm.
Concert:
Quintessential will perform at Appletreewick Village Hall
on Saturday, March 31, from 7.30pm. This is the farewell concert
after a year together. The programme includes renaissance
choral music by Wilby and Morely, songs by Tchaikovsky and
Elgar, a folk song tapestry and songs from Gershwin and Tom

Buckden Singers:
The Buckden Singers celebrate their fifth anniversary this
year and are holding a concert to mark the occasion on Friday

School governors are keen to discover the whereabouts of ex-pupils
and other scallywags from over the past 60 years. Contact

Friendship Club:
Police work will be the focus of Thursday's Friendship Club
meeting. Members will meet in Church House at 2.15pm. Next

Whist drive:
A whist drive will be held in the games room at the town hall
from 7.30pm on Saturday.
Chamber AGM:
The Chamber of Trade will hold its annual general meeting
in the Foresters Arms at 7.30pm on Monday.
Upper Wharfedale
Church volunteers:
St Michael's at Linton is looking for volunteers to help look
after the church. Anyone who can help should contact Joan

Lent discussion:
Gill Jowett, of Barn Garth House, Litton, will host the Lent
Discussion Group which will meet on Mondays at 2pm. The discussions
will focus on the DVD, Yorkshire Puddings, a series of reflections
by Adrian Plass.
Highland fling:
The Highland-themed evening at Kettlewell Village Hall raised
£241 for St Mary's Church.
Jar of Grace:
Parishioners in Kettlewell and Conistone raised £100
for UNICEF through the Jar of Grace initiative. The money
will help malnourished children across the world.
Falcon thanks:
Thanks have been extended to Robin and Elspeth Miller, who
are leaving the Falcon at Arncliffe, for hosting their last
dominoes evening. The results were: under-16s -1 Thomas Pringle,
2 Maisie Harrison, booby prize Holly Harrison; adults - 1
Samantha Harrison, 2 Rachel Lund, booby prize Maurice Hirst

Fundraising:
The Christmas card delivery service in Littondale made just
over £98 for St Oswald's, Arncliffe. And the carol singing
at the Queen's Arms, Litton, and the Falcon, Arncliffe, raised
£100 for the Children's Society.
Charity service:
The beneficiary of this month's charity collection at St Michael's
Church, Hubberholme, will be The Tear Fund.
Luncheon Club:
The club will meet in Kettlewell Village Hall next Thursday,

Indoor bowls:
Indoor bowls continue in Kettlewell Village Hall every Wednesday

Embroiderers'
Guild:
At their meeting in February, members enjoyed a day
of reminiscence and creativity working on "Imagery in
Textiles" with Anne Burrow. The next meeting, at Wharfedale
Rugby Club, Threshfield, on Wednesday, March 7, at 1.30pm,
will be a talk by Janet Taylor on The Luttrell Psalter. Entry
is £5.
Garden talk:
Michael Myers will address Grassington Horticultural Society
in the Octagon Theatre, Thursday at 7.30pm. His talk is called
The Weird and Wonderful. Visitors are welcome.
Gills Top:
Gills Top, the Anchor care home on Scar Street, will hold
a coffee morning Friday. Homemade biscuits will be on sale
and there will be a raffle. Proceeds will go the residents'
amenities fund.
Lenten lunch:
The Lenten lunch at Church House on Wednesday will be hosted
by members of St Margaret Clitherow Church, Threshfield. It
will start at noon.
Friendship Club:
"Orchids in the wild" will be the subject of Margaret
Hartley's address to the Friendship Club Thursday at 2.15pm.
A member of the police force will be the speaker next Thursday,
March 8. Members will hold their annual coffee morning in
Church House on Saturday from 10am. Everyone is welcome.
Coffee morning:
A coffee morning in aid of Grass Woods made £739 for
the nature reserve.
Upper Wharfedale
Women's Institute:
Threshfield and Linton WI held its annual general meeting,
when an election was held to appoint new committee members.
Julia Armstrong was elected president for a further year.
The next meeting is at Threshfield Institute on Wednesday,
March 14, when Elaine Macha will talk about Life in Tanzania.
The competition will be for an African curio. Members are
reminded about the Craven Brasserie dinner Thursday. If transport
is required, contact the secretary.
Musical evening:
The Old Hall Inn at Threshfield will hold a music night on
Saturday, featuring the Robinson Brothers. It starts at 7.30pm.
Hall AGM:
Kettlewell Village Hall will hold its annual general meeting
in the social room on Monday at 7.30pm. Nominations are required
for committee members as several of the present committee
are retiring.
Volunteers needed:
Volunteers are still needed for the spring variety show, which
will be staged in Kettlewell Village Hall on March 30 and

Velma Pegg, leader of Linton Mothers' Union, says 2011 was
a good year for fundraising, with £950 being raised.
Lenten lunches:
Kettlewell Vicarage will be hosting Lenten lunches on Fridays
at 12.30pm. The first will take place on March 2. There is
no charge, but donations for charity will be invited.

Weekly Lenten lunch events start on Wednesday in Church House,

Farmers' market:
A farmers' market will be held on the Square on Sunday. It
will start at 10am.
Friendship Club:
Members will enjoy a film show with Spellbound Thursday. Next
week, February 23, Betty Hargreaves will present

Coffee morning:
Supporters of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust will hold a coffee
morning in Church House on Saturday, from 9.30am to noon.
Panto fun:
Grassington Pantoloons will present Peter Pan, written by
Dr Andrew Jackson, in the town hall on Fridays February 17
and 24 at 7.30pm and on Saturdays February 18 and 25 at 2.30pm
and 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6 for adults and £4
for children from The Hub, on Garrs Lane, or on the door.
Proceeds will be donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Help for Heroes:
Pat Haslam thanks all those who supported the Help for Heroes
coffee morning in Church House, which raised £562. Children
from Grassington Primary School presented a splendid display,
which included the involvement of some of their relatives
who were in the services.
Upper Wharfedale
Coffee morning:
A coffee morning to raise money for the Arncliffe Church bells
will be held next Saturday, February 25, in Halton Gill Reading
Room.
Whist drive:
A whist drive will be held on Wednesday, February 29, in Buckden
Institute. Doors open 6.30pm, with the first hand at 7pm.
Indian evening:
There will be an Indian evening in Buckden Institute next
Saturday, February 25, with Indian cuisine. Proceeds will

The Upper Wharfedale branch of the Wharfedale Family History

Fairtrade:
Fairtrade Fortnight will be launched at the Congregational
Church on Saturday, February 25. There will be an all-day
event, incorporating morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon
tea. Cards, gifts and groceries from Traidcraft and Tearcraft
will be on sale. All proceeds will go to Christian Aid.
Upper Wharfedale
Whist drive:
The next whist drive in Buckden institute will be on Wednesday.
Doors open at 6.30pm.
Library visits:
On Wednesday, the supermobile library will be in Buckden car
park from 10.30am to 12.30pm and at Kettlewell's national
park car park from 2pm to 4pm.
Blind money:
The carol singing around Buckden on Christmas Eve raised £170.87
for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Coffee morning:
A successful coffee morning at Halton Gill Reading Room raised
£340 for the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association.
Since the coffee mornings began just over a year ago, a total
of £1,463 had been raised for various charities.
Parish council:
Buckden Parish Council meets in the village institute on Monday
at 8pm.
Women's Institute:
PC Richard Gape and his two dogs, Moss and Otto, were the
guests at Kettlewell WI's first meeting of 2012. He demonstrated
the work of police dogs. At the next meeting on Tuesday, the
group is hosting an evening called "What do you want
from your WI?". There will be a soup supper and the competition
will be for a Valentine card.
Lunch club:
Kettlewell's luncheon club will be held in the village hall
next Thursday, February 16, from 12.30pm. If you wish to attend,

a home-cooked two-course meal and various activities. The
manager will be happy to take visitors on a tour of the premises.

The Old Hall Inn, Threshfield, is hosting a community coffee
morning every Friday at 10am All proceeds will go to locally

Concert CD:
Copies of the double CD of the Songs of the Dales concert,
performed by the Waggoners in Hubberholme Church, are available
at £8. These can be obtained from the church on Sundays,
or by telephone on (01756) 753872. They will also be on sale
at the shop in Buckden. Half of the proceeds will go to church
funds.
Supper dance:
A dance and supper will be held in Cracoe Village Hall on
Saturday, from 7.30pm to 11.30pm.
Institute AGM:
The annual general meeting of Threshfield Village Institute
will be held in the institute on Monday at 7.30pm.
Women's Institute:
Edwin Page entertained members of Threshfield and Linton WI
at their January meeting with a talk entitled Hebridean Horizons.
He described a cruise around the Hebridean Islands, illustrated
with musical interludes. Subscriptions are due at the February
meeting along with a deposit for the Craven Brasserie meal.
The meeting, on Wednesday, February 8, will be the annual
general meeting when voting will take place for committee
positions.

Chamber of Trade:
The next meeting will be at the Congregational Church, on
Garrs Lane, on Wednesday at 6.30pm. Two items on the agenda
are the Dickensian Christmas and the website.
Friendship Club:
John Cumberland will present a talk on Brazil at Thursday's
meeting in Church House at 2.15pm. Hanneke Dye is the guest
speaker next Thursday, January 26, and will talk on "The
role of the Jewish Lady in Judaism".
Film night:
A movie night will be held at the Octagon Theatre next Saturday,
January 28. The films will be Alvin and The Chipmunks - the
Squeakuel at 5pm and Black Swan at 7.30pm. Admission, per
film, is £4 for adults, £2 for children and £10
for families (maximum of four children). Tickets are available
from the Hub, Garrs Lane, or on the door.
Helping Hands:

Women's Institute:
The January luncheon for Rylstone WI will be Thursday at The
Devonshire Arms, Cracoe.
Church council:
Hubberholme Parochial Church Council has revealed it costs
around E20,000 a year to keep St Michael and All Angels' Parish
Church in working order. It is open to the public every day.
The finances of the past year were presented by the treasurer,
Jayne Sayer, at a recent PCC meeting. The funds were in the
red and this has to be solved.
Village Hall:
Hilda and Tommy Wellock will be stepping down as bookings
secretary and caretaker/ cleaner respectively of Cracoe Village
Hall. Both have served the charity in these capacities for
more than 10 years, during which time the hall has gone from
strength to strength. Stephen Turner, secretary and treasurer
to the trustees, said they planned to stand down with effect
from January 2013 so that during 2012 they could work alongside
their successors. Anyone willing to be considered for these

Book Club:
There is no Book Club in January. February's Book Club will
be held at the Old Police House, Cracoe. The book is Mutant

Pictures sought:
The Friends of Arncliffe School urgently require photographs
and memories of time spent at Arncliffe School for a book
being produced to commemorate the life and times of the school,
which closed in July. Particularly required are photographs
from 1970 onwards.
Talent show:
The Littondale's Got Talent Show returns to Amerdale Hall
on Saturday, February 4, from 7.30pm. Two empty slots need

Women's Institute:
Members of Kettlewell WI held their Christmas meal at The
Gamekeepers' Inn, Long Ashes, Threshfield. The evening was
rounded off with a lucky dip, which raised £44 for the
Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
School friends:
The Friends of Cracoe School will hold their annual general
meeting at the Devonshire Arms, Cracoe, at 7pm on Wednesday.
Greetings money:
The Christmas greetings page in Rylstone Parish Magazine raised
£80 for Macmillan Cancer Relief.
Parish council:
Kettlewell with Starbotton Parish Council has con-firmed that
speed monitoring equipment will be placed near the playground
on Conistone Road and along the road leading to the primary
school. Information gathered will enable the parish council
to discuss the issue of speeding motorists with the police
and high-ways. PCSO Gary Battison is monitoring parking in
the village and will place a warning notice on any offending
vehicles. If these warnings are ignored, there will be no
alternative but to issue parking tickets.
Luncheon club:
The January luncheon club in Kettlewell Villag Hall will be
held next Thursday, January 19, at 12.30pm. Telephone Anne

Indoor bowls:
Indoor bowls contin-ues in Kettlewell Village Hall on Wednesdays
from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. The cost is £2 per session, to
include tea and biscuits.
Showtime:
Thespians, troubadours and dancers are all in demand in Kettlewell
for their "Showtime" production in March. Performers
are required and anyone interested should contact producer
Geoff Queen on 760314. The event raises money for the village
hall.
Poppy money:
A total of £680.97 was collected in the Kettlewell area
for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2011. This includes
the house to house collection and donations from pubs, the
school and church, plus the memorial service collection.
Bridge Club:
Kettlewell Bridge Club will meet in the social room of the
village hall at 7pm on Tuesdays January 17 and 31. New members
and visitors are welcome. Thaching sessions for beginners

Church thanks:
The churchwardens of Hubberholme Church extend their thanks
to everyone who joined the working party to clear the overgrown
grass in the churchyard. A good tidy-up was achieved Thanks
also go to those on the cleaning rota. The church's Remembrance
Day service raised £274 for the Royal British Legion
for its work on behalf of its armed forces.
Coffee morning:
The December coffee morning in Kettlewell, arranged by Barbara
Lambert for the Children's Society, raised £323. Collection
boxes realised another £335.
Youth group:
The Upper Dales 7Up Group for those aged seven to 11 from
Wharfedale and Littondale will meet in Kettlewell Village
Hall on Tuesday, January 24, straight from school until 4.30pm.
A walk-ing bus will be supervised by Tracy Briggs. For more

Unity service:
There will be a unity service in Grassington Town Hall on
Sunday at llam to commemorate the Week of Prayer for Christian
Unity. It will be led by the Methodist minister, Janet Clasper,
and the preacher will be the Roman Catholic priest Andrew
Summerskill.
Church kneelers:
The kneelers at Kettlewell Church are in need of attention.
Liz Ward has offered to host a coffee morning at her home
tomorrow (Friday) from 10am. Anyone willing to repair and
renovate kneelers is invited to attend. Instructions and materials

of the year. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, when Edwin
Page will talk on Hebridean Horizons at Threshfield Institute.
